At Sweet’s Syrup we’re all about preventing sickness and a strong immune system. I didn't realize about the important role Vitamin D plays in our immune system until I saw a video by Dr. Palermo at Thrive Carolinas. This is what she said:
Studies have shown Vitamin D plays a role in our immune system. It works at stimulating microphages and also t-cells which are important at fighting bacteria and viruses, as well as cancer cells. It also helps reduce the incidence of autoimmunity. In a study of over 350 Japanese children who received Vitamin D as compared to those who received a placebo, there was a 40% decrease in the incidence of the flu in these children. Optimal Vitamin D levels are between 50-80. It is important to get your levels checked and supplement yourself with an active Vitamin D3 so you can be in this range.
Vitamin D has a slew of benefits - this image from Dr. Axe highlights a few:
Chances are very high you’re deficient in Vitamin D - even spending lots of time in the sunshine isn’t enough because being so far from the Equator the sun isn’t intense enough. Supplementing is critical -And supplementing with the RIGHT kind is so important!
Vitamin K is very important for proper Vitamin D absorption - Dr. Mercola wrote a great article about this. One huge benefit of Vitamin D is how it improves bone development by helping with calcium absorption, but it is Vitamin K that directs the calcium to your skeleton - not to other part of your body where you don't want it like organs, joints and arteries (atherosclerosis, “hardening of arteries”). Mercola says “You can think of vitamin D as the gatekeeper, controlling who gets in, and vitamin K as the traffic cop, directing the traffic to where it needs to go. Lots of traffic -- but no traffic cop -- means clogging, crowding, and chaos everywhere!”
I rotate between these two supplements: this Vitamin D supplement with Vitamin K that I buy from Dr. Ana-Maria Temple at Integrative Health Carolinas. Good stuff
I also really like this Super-Cal Plus from Young Living recommended by my Integrative Family Doctor Cammy Benton, MD - it has Vitamin D, Vitamin K, Magnesium and Calcium. Hard to get this balance for proper absorption and they got it right. (I don’t sell any of this but am happy to connect you with my awesome incredibly informed Young Living rep!).
Another great source of Vitamin D that I take regularly is cod liver oil - the best brand available is Rosita’s. Heads up, GET THE CAPSULES NOT THE LIQUID. Holy cow is that hard to get down, I gagged every time until I found the capsules. Was one of the worst parts of my day.
I also focus on getting Vitamin D from the foods I eat (and I’m not talking about milk fortified with Vitamin D) - we have salmon every week (WILD CAUGHT ONLY!!!), pastured eggs, mushrooms and tuna - I just can’t do sardines, can’t.
So, go get your levels tested and keep them in the proper range to optimize your immune system!!!
